I create collages that speak the language of my heart. When my mother died, I felt a profound sense of loss. One day, I found myself sketching an image of her cradling her children and grandchildren. Within two days, I was cutting out triangles, rectangles, and swirling ribbons of recycled magazine paper creating my first collage, “Our Mother.” As I worked, I could feel my mother’s Spirit guiding me to do more.
In my figurative work, the images are inspired by the traditional arts of native cultures in the U.S. and Mexico. They tenderly express the feelings of love between mothers and daughters, between sisters, friends, and lovers, and between each of us and our spiritual beliefs. In my landscape collages, I tear recycled magazines into paper strips and layer these to create dramatic seascapes and mountains. To produce my abstract designs, I cut out basic shapes and arrange them to create a textured blend of colorful squares, rectangles, and stripes.
In each of these images, my heart celebrates our connections with each other, and with the sacredness of everyday life.
